Why E-Book Sellers Should Account for the Resale Value of Physical Books when Pricing Textbooks

Despite the current swell of trendy enthusiasm for e-book readers (e.g., the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Reader, and iPad), companies that have largely failed to account for the resale value of physical books in their pricing of electronic versions of textbooks. Consequently, e-book versions of textbooks are selling much more slowly than they could.

Why Students Keep Buying Physical Textbooks Instead of E-Books

In my experience, most (as opposed to electronic versions) resell these books (usually on-line at eBay, Amazon.com, or a similar site). For example, a student might be forced to pay $180 for a brand new edition of a textbook, but he/she knows that the book can be resold at the end of the semester for $100 or so (including sales fees). The actual cost of the book, therefore, is $80, as long as it remains in good condition.

Currently, the price of e-book versions of textbooks is very close to the cost of brand new physical books (and usually more than the used price for physical books). So for example, while the new physical book might cost $180 and the e-book version might cost $140.

Even if a student already owns an e-book reader, he/she would probably rather buy a new textbook and then resell it (thereby using our hypothetical numbers) than buy an e-book version that cannot be resold (for $140). Using our hypothetical numbers, the student is $60 better off if he/she buys a physical copy of the textbook. And this is without even accounting for the fact that most textbooks are not brand new editions, and that used prices for textbooks are generally less than the e-book price.

How E-Book Sellers Can Account for the Resale Price of Physical Textbooks When Pricing Textbooks

It should be fairly simple for e-book sellers to price their students. Using the numbers in our hypothetical situation above (i.e., $180 for a physical textbook, $140 for the e-book version, and $100 of resale value for the physical textbook), we conclude that an e-book version of the textbook must be priced at $80 or less (i.e., the actual cost to a student who buys a new textbook and then resells it at the end of the semester) to appeal to a

Over time, the optimal price for an e-book version of a textbook will decline. Used copies of the physical book will start being sold, reducing the cost for a student to own a physical copy for a semester. For example, a year after its release, our $180 physical textbook might be selling at a used price of $60. A student might be able to buy the book for $60 and resell it for $30, thereby absorbing a cost of only $30. In that case, the e-book version is only appealing if it costs $30 or less.

Publishers of e-book readers should be able to price their products dynamically (i.e., change the price over time in response to market conditions). Because there is virtually no variable cost to producing an e-book (i.e., after the initial cost of producing the book, allowing people to download copies costs almost nothing), publishers can still make money on e-books, even if the prices become extremely low.

Conclusions About the Pricing of E-Book Versions of Textbooks

As e-book readers like the Kindle, Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Apple iPad become more popular and widely used, the number of able to use e-books will increase. To reach this emerging body of consumers, textbook publishers need to understand the consumers’ financial alternatives and price e-books accordingly.

Selling Digital Goods and E-books Online

What are digital products? Digital products are goods like videos, audio files, mp3’s, music, digital art, movies, manuals, certificates, articles, files, private websites access, pod casts, software and e-books. Selling of digital products online is a fast growing industry at this time of cyber space age. The most important concern regarding this industry is piracy since this affects the writers/authors, publishers and programmers billions worth of money per year in e-commerce gains.

The demands for information technology and for digital products had boosted radically in the previous years generating an extremely lucrative industry to get into. Producing e-books and developing software became an easy. With all the information accessible on the internet and with the outsourcing business community, anyone who is digitally driven can be able to generate a highly lucrative digital product.

There are many small, medium and large scale websites that are selling these digital products. These websites have their own digital products shopping carts that have efficient and secured digital products delivery tools that avoid illegal access to products. On the occasion that the digital products had been delivered to the customers, it would take a lot of efforts to stop the buyer from re-distributing soft copies to other people like their families, friends and colleagues. Those receivers re-distribute the copies again to their families, friends and co-workers and the process will just continue like a cycle. These activities will cause enormous losses in profit.

The first client’s dilemma will be even more dangerous in purchasing the product. When the client asks for a reimbursement, the seller might lose the initial sale. However, the initial buyer can still keep the digital product and can still have the capacity to redistribute the digital products. Companies and websites that sell digital products offer refunds because this is the easiest way to raise sales profits. On the contrary, they do not know that this will only give room to negative behaviours of deceitful buyers.

There are ways to address with the security issues in selling digital products. The sellers can invest on comprehensive program that would allow the seller to enhance their tracking capabilities in order for them to track if their digital products are being reproduced..

Other features of this program are security licensing and registration key tools. The However, this will consume much time to set up and maintain.

It is possible to secure the sold digital products. It is also possible to deactivate the license key if the seller finds out that the initial buyer is redistributing the digital products that they bought. The following can help sellers to protect their digital products from being pirated:

Post the digital product through the web interface, adding more specific facts about the product and where it can be downloaded. Use special desktop software application, put user ID, product ID and password. Put license key that can only be used by one client. After using the license key by the registered buyer/owner it will be deactivated when re-distributed.

We wonder you are, and so here are some factual points we know, that could influence your buying and dropping decision. Notebook PC pros and cons..

Notebook Pros (first)

Notebook Computer is amazing mainly because of its small-sized looks. You can carry your interests anywhere. Any Software’s, games, movies, even the minute-to-minute details that when needed for rewind purposes, you can enjoy them and share with others.

You’re no longer tethered to your office desktops, or even to a power outlet. We couldn’t find a place where these Notebooks can’t go. Can you? So what basically does it means?

Simple, you can entertain your friends outside your apartment, do videos with girls on beach and enjoy life to its maximum. Feeling tired and exhausted, sick of your place, the not done, then pick your seat in the McDonalds and get the Notebook do your home work. Gone abroad and need some back pats? Share your memories while connected to the Internet and encourage yourself instantly.

It’s just not limited to them. You have got a friend, entertaining you 24 hours. Think about it, use it as you wish, it won’t say never to you, though your friend may. Notebook Cons

There’s not much to argument on it, though as Century changes, technology changes. If you can buy a PC for half to $1000, you will buy a Notebook close to $1000. Many now are tagged for $600 (or more) for average users. It’s mainly because of its small-size and many can’t afford it. Computer parts and machinery can not be fitted elsewhere hence these same parts are slimmed down to a more compact size of a Notebook model.

Furthermore stretchy people have got little to benefit from it. The keyboards quite small and narrowed though they can adjust it to their desired positions. Gaming folks cherish big screens, they can’t get it. Others are used to the mouse tradition and won’t prefer anything else. With that being said there are alternatives and they may need to buy a separate mouse or a cord connected to the big screen.

Last of all you may stick to what you have. Any changes or video card upgrades simply don’t exist next to a Notebook. Reread Notebook pros and cons before you set out spending big. It’s not for everybody, you know.

Do You Buy Ebooks on Ebay? You May Pay for Free or Illegal Books!

One of my special interests, as you can tell from checking the list of my articles, is finding free and legal books, movies, and audio online. Recently, I’ve discovered how, if you have a Nook or Kindle or even a computer, you can access free magazine and newspaper subscriptions (here) and thousands–in fact, millions–of free ebooks (here).

I do know the meaning of the word buy, although obtaining books for your computer, Nook, or Kindle by purchasing from Ebay is not appealing, because you most likely will be paying for books that you can get free elsewhere, or you may even be buying pirated books.

Ebay and Craigslist

In my articles about Craigslist (most recently here) I stress that Craiglist is a great online resource, but when you use it, you must be careful, because there is not much policing of the advertisements.

The same is true of EBay. I have bought and sold things on EBay for many years, but I know that you have to be careful there. So, this article is meant not to be a negative review of Ebay, the popular but rather to be a warning to people who use it.

Paying for free ebooks for your computer, Nook, or Kindle

As I am writing this, there are 177 items on Ebay returned for a search for “Kindle books,” although at least one of those is a paper (“dead tree”) book with the word kindle in its title.

Many of them offer a CD or DVD full of classic texts, books now in the public domain because copyright has expired (currently in the United States, before 1923). Great, but if you check the authors and titles, you will see that you can download these texts for free, as apparently these Ebay sellers have; once again, check the three main sites for downloading free books (here).

There is nothing illegal about this. The books are in the public domain, so anyone who wants to sell or buy them is free to do so.

Paying for illegal ebooks for your computer, Nook, or Kindle

My experience has been that many offerings of digital material – ebooks, CDs, and DVDs – on Ebay are pirated, that is, illegal. I bought a CD of a Bob Dylan album once, and I got a home-made CD… in a plastic sandwich bag!

Other than the public domain books for the Kindle, many of the books on Ebay are illegal. You will find offerings of books by extremely popular, best-selling authors. I found one item that consists of six books for the Kindle by probably one of the most popular writers around, whose works sell millions of copies and are the basis for equally popular films. The six less than one of the books if bought legally through Amazon’s Kindle store.

Not only are these books violating copyright law, but they also violate Ebay’s own rules. According to one listing, “Upon checkout, we will email you a link for downloading your purchase.” (Those are not the exact words, but they are close enough.) Yet, Ebay specifically prohibits this kind of purchase. Anything sold on Ebay must be a physical item, such as a CD with the files on them.

To buy or not to buy ebooks on Ebay?

It might be worthwhile for you to purchase one of the huge selections of public domain books, because that would save the time to find and download them. Just remember, that you can get these for free. If you are so inclined, you could even sell them yourself, or you can copy the …

How to Get Your College Textbooks for Free

Most of us know or heard about how much cost. Three textbooks can cost a student around $500 – $600. That’s a lot of money, especially for who have to pay for other things like rent. Good thing there is a way to get your college textbooks for free. This article will tell you how.

from your friends and classmates

In order to get college textbooks for free you have to have good friends. Borrowing books from friends who already had the class you’re taking is a good idea. Normally in college, friends and classmates are drawn to help one another out. Sharing is a big thing in college because there are lots of help and will help you if they also know you will help them. So, please consider asking your friends and classmates for help.

Requesting books from other libraries in your state

Another way to get college textbooks for free is to borrow from your state’s libraries. Find out your state’s library database system. Michigan state library database system is www.mel.org. On this site, you can search for the textbook that you need. This system will find the books for you and show you what libraries in your state have them. After finding your from your college and have them delivered to your college’s library. Also, check on your school’s library web-page, they will normally have this information for you under “borrowing”. Interlibrary loan is also another way to borrow books.

The only downside to this is that you have to renew the books; there’s also a limit on how many times you can renew the book. This can result in you not having a book by semester end because there is a due date on brining the book back. Also, sometimes there may not be any books that you need at any libraries in your state. However, this is still a very good option in getting your college textbooks for free.

Use Your Colleges’ Library Reserve System

Another way to get your college textbooks for free is to use the reserve system at your college’s libraries. Sometimes Professors put copies of textbooks that students need on reserve in the library. You can check these books out for a limited time. You will have to use those books in the library for the whole time you’re allowed to check it out. You cannot leave the library with reserve books because other students need them. What you can do is make copies of the pages you need and make sure you go very early in the morning when you want to check them out.

So, borrowing textbooks from your friends and classmates, using your state’s library database system, and using your college’s library reserve system can help you avoid paying for your college textbooks. Good luck !
